The .45 ACP
45M1911 pistol
John Browning designed the Colt 1911 .45 Automatic pistol, the pistol held 7 rounds in a detachable magazine most often referred to incorrectly as a clip. The design of the weapon was simple as it reloaded itself using the energy from the exiting round, this was extremely helpful in close quartered combat.
The M1911 was used in the U.S. Military from 1911 until 1985 and is probably the most recognizable weapon in the world. The weapon gained widespread support by troops during the first World War increasing the demand and that led to the Springfield Armory manufacturing the weapon in addition to Colt.
The Colt .45 ACP was replaced by use in the U.S. Military by the Beretta 92F in 1985, the 9mm weapon was chosen for logical reasons, most of the worlds armies used 9mm ammunition and the theory was ammunition would be plentiful during any future conflicts.

Interesting and informative Hub...I loved the .45 and carried one as a side-arm during my tour in the Corps...My understanding of the weapons' origins refers to the conflict in the Philippines against the Muslim Moros ( 1899-1913 )...We were told the fanatical Moros would wrap themselves with bamboo strips and charge directly at a position, taking several hits before being brought down...The .45 " tumbles " when it leaves the barrel, traveling at a measly 802 ft per second...But when it strikes the enemy, anywhere, arm, shoulder, leg, he goes down...Plus the noise was another factor...They make a lot of noise...Thanks for the share...Larry
Yes, very informative. I prefer a 9mm myself - but that's only because I can't decide on which .45 to get. Thanks for the info :)
Recognize the gun Bill but never handled one. My side arm in the military was a .38 revolver. I suppose they are gone the way of the .45 by now. The 9mm seems to be a favorable weapon with most folks...nothing like having a little extra ammo at hand! Thanks. WB
